Keep Them Entertained This Summer - Outdoor Games For Kids

Friday, June 1, 2012
Studies have shown that the recent trend of indoor entertainment can have a negative impact on children's health. The plethora of new children-orientated television channels, the multitude of gaming consoles available on the market and the emphasis on technology directly correlate with overall poor health in the nation's next generation. Childhood obesity is at an all-time high and more children are developing diabetes as a result of lack of exercise and frequent snacking. The rise of diagnosed ADHD has also been linked to the frantic over-stimulation of media-based entertainment. This is why outdoor games for kids are rising in popularity among health-savvy families.

Outdoor games for kids are often far cheaper than their indoor equivalents. There can be hours of fun derived from a single soccer ball, which often costs under ten dollars for a cheap plastic model. Compare this to the cost of a PlayStation or Xbox game, which can cost nearly sixty dollars and are quickly discarded after one or two play-throughs. A soccer ball can provide entertainment for one child by himself, as he practices his dribbling skills or kicks the ball against a wall. Likewise, it can provide bonding and socialization opportunities as the child participates in a game of soccer with other kids from the neighborhood. The benefits from this are immediate and obvious: the child learns teamwork, co-operation with others, gets some exercise and has fun while doing it. What exercise is the child who sits indoors playing a soccer simulation game on a console getting, apart from occasionally moving his fingers?

There are also many cheap toys (under ten dollars) that can be used in outdoor play. A skipping rope can be used alone, which is an excellent form of exercise; or three people can take part in a complex skipping game with one child hopping up and down in the middle. A hula hoop is great for exercising belly muscles, and a favorite summer pastime for kids is seeing who can keep the hula-hoop in the air for longest while music plays. Another cheap outdoors toy is a skittles set - the game can be easily set up on a sidewalk or a quiet cul-de-sac, and several kids from the neighborhood can get involved in a skittles championship league. All of the above games are cheap and durable, and when taken care of properly will last your child for years.

Slightly more expensive, but equally as fun, are the more sports-orientated games. A baseball ball and mitt can provide hours of entertainment, as well as bonding time between family members. An additional bonus is that this hobby can become a lifetime one. The child could join a local Little League team, and continue the sport throughout high school and college. The child ends up having so much fun bowling and catching that they don't realize that they are actually getting some exercise! Street hockey, with a junior-sized stick, is also a great way of incorporating actual sport into kid's play.

The health benefits of outdoors play are undeniable, and the additional socialization that accompanies it is invaluable for a child's development. The number of obese and unfit children is on the rise in America, and it's time to buck the trend.

My Child Is Gifted. Which Educational Toys and Games Will Keep Them Engaged And Interested?

It is not new at all that parents usually think that their boy or girl is the cutest, most intelligent and nicest kid on Earth. In fact, whenever a child shows some kind of specific interest in books, dinosaurs, colors, numbers, foreign languages or some kind or other of artistic expression, parents are eager to nourish and encourage that interest in them by sending them to private lessons, museums or by buying them books, reading to them, taking them to artistic workshops and so on.

However, there are times in which your child is truly special and it is undeniable that his intelligence is higher and more acute than other children his age. He gets bored at school, asks questions that are not typical of his age range and finally parents admit that their child is gifted. Finding the right school for a gifted child can be challenging. Most gifted children are extremely curious and show avid interest about a wide variety of things. In fact, their mind seems to jump from one idea to the other and they are usually fascinated whenever they discover or learn something new. If this is the case of your gifted child, make sure you offer him games that appeal to his interests. Puzzles, word and number games that may even seem too complicated for an ordinary child his age may offer your child a great stimuli to his avid imagination and eagerness.

If your gifted child shows a special inclination for painting and drawing, an excellent educational game for him can be an art easel. Make sure you also offer him crayons, markers, pencils, aquarelles and painting for him to explore his passion and plenty and plenty of blank white or colored sheets of paper. Art books or art related software programs that offer the viewer virtual tours around museums or expositions are also a great alternative and there are even some that are

If your gifted child loves music or is fascinated by a musical instrument in special, you should not think it twice and offer him a child version of the musical instrument he loves, music lessons, and even taking him to a concert can be a great educational experience for him.

Science games that allow children to create their own formulas or how different elements interact or react with each other are also worth considering educational toys and games for gifted children.

The educational development of your child is an incredible journey, one that begins before birth! And it's a difficult journey, wading through the mountain of information on not only the educational, but the social / emotional development of your child.

Kids' Easter Games

Tuesday, May 1, 2012
When Easter comes there are loads of kids' Easter games that you can use at school, at home or at Easter parties and celebrations. There are games that are loud and active and quieter games that are ideal for indoors. If you are looking for something a bit a different you may like to try one of these kids' Easter games.

Easter Bowling

This is one of those kids' Easter games that can be played with a small group of children but it is also suitable for a large group.

For this game you can use hard boiled eggs that have been painted or dyed in different colors or you can use chocolate Easter eggs with different colored wrappers. Give a different colored egg to each child. Now take a plain hard boiled egg and roll that egg across the floor or the grass.

The children each have a turn at rolling their egg so that it stops as close as possible to the plain egg. The one whose egg is closest to the white one wins that round. At this time the child can either win a small prize or points can be counted and then prizes awarded after several rounds.

Egg Throwing

An egg throwing competition is one of the messy kids' Easter games that will need to be played outside. The kids compete in pairs and each pair will need an egg. Use fresh eggs not hard boiled eggs to make it more interesting.

Each pair stands a short distance apart. You may like to draw two parallel lines on the ground so that one person from each pair stands on one line and the other person stand facing them on the other line.

The pairs have to throw and catch the egg between them. Any pair that drops an egg is immediately eliminated. After each successful throw and catch, the partners then move one step further apart and repeat. The winners are the last pair left in the competition.

Easter Bingo

Easter Bingo is one of the quieter Kids' Easter games that can be played indoors. Children can make their own bingo cards before they play the game or an adult can prepare this.

The bingo cards can be made with Easter words or Easter pictures. If you are using pictures these can be draw, printed on the computer or stickers can be used.

Each player will need a card with a 3 X 3 grid filled in with Easter words or Easter pictures. The caller calls out the words or the names of the pictures and the players cover their words or pictures when they are called. The first winner can be the first person to cover three in a row, vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The second winner will be the person who covers all nine words or pictures first

Online Games Help Kids Learn First Grade Math

Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Math is a subject that many kids have trouble with as they progress through school. It's essential that math basic skills be mastered early on, as these skills build the foundation for understanding harder concepts introduced in higher grades. First grade math contains quite a few important skills, and using online games may be able to give students the help they need in order to become fluent in working with numbers.

Building on Basic Concepts

In kindergarten, kids learn simple math skills like number recognition and counting. They're able to begin to recognize that higher numbers are bigger numbers and can understand concepts like counting by twos and tens. Using online games with these children when they reach first grade can help them transition between beginning math skills and more complex numerical concepts. Providing a wide variety of different games in an entertaining online environment gets kids excited about tackling new ideas and puts math in a positive context. Once the foundation has been laid for basic comprehension and computational skills, children can use these games to progress even further.

Mastering New Skills

By the time they're learning first grade math, kids should be ready to tackle things like the relationship between addition and subtraction, the concept of adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and learning to count beyond 100. Being able to compare numbers as larger, smaller or equal to each other is also important, as it provides the basis for recognizing whether or not the answer to a computation problem is the correct one.

Children need to be allowed to master these and other essential math skills before being asked to move on to new ideas, but the modern classroom setting doesn't always allow for this. As focus on core curriculum begins to push complex ideas into lower grade levels, kids are expected to learn more at a younger age. First grade math still contains many fundamental concepts essential for understanding higher math, and therefore shouldn't be rushed through. By letting a child try and re-try each new thing as it comes, online math games can give the extra time and practice that struggling students need to achieve success.

Taking it One Step at a Time

Every child learns at a different rate, but it's important to remember that all children should be able to grasp similar concepts once they've completed first grade math. Without the ability to count, add, subtract and understand basic relationships between all three, progression to higher math becomes difficult. Though online math games can't be used to teach everything a child needs to know, they can be an invaluable tool when it comes to augmenting what is learned in the classroom. Games supply a different context and more interactive setting than worksheets and are also more dynamic, which gives kids a new way to think about the concepts they're learning and can shed light on things they may be having trouble with.

The interactive world of online games makes first grade math enjoyable for young children and allows them to practice new math concepts outside of school. Both parents and teachers can use these tools to enhance traditional learning, thereby giving kids a unique and entertaining way to hone necessary math skills

Finding the Best Interactive Games For Children Under 10

Monday, April 2, 2012
Research into child development and education shows that interactive toys and games are essential for helping children develop their skills and abilities. So what is the definition of an interactive game? If you think about it, most toys and games could be described as requiring or encouraging a certain amount of interaction from children but some games can be said to be more passive than others. To give a good example, a TV show is almost as passive as it gets and though not technically a game and more an activity that someone participates in, watching a TV show is passive. Unless, of course, you encourage your child to comment upon the events of what is happening in the TV show. For instance, you could ask your child what they think is going to happen next during the storyline. Another thing that you could do is ask what colour a certain character is or whether you think that they are behaving in a good way or in a bad way. This brings up the question of morals and is obviously extremely fundamental in your child's upbringing. So whilst watching a TV show is a very passive pass-time, certain degrees of interactivity can still be introduced into this type of activity and it can be educational in the correct quantities.

The other extreme is a toy or game which actually requires interaction for it to work such as a game which requires your child to press a button to produce a sound or make a choice between pressing 3 different buttons to answer a question. This helps decision making and positive feedback can be provided by the interactive toy or game to show your child that they have made the correct choice. This helps to reinforce the correct behaviour and encourages your child to play more and, in turn, learn more. It's great to watch your child who is under 10 playing with interactive toys and games because you know that what they are doing is very positive and that it is helping them to learn. I always think that it's a good idea and educate your child yourself even though they are going to school because the more they learn about the world and their surrounding the more information they will take in and the more knowledge they will acquire. It's great to learn and there are lots of different types of interactive games out there for children.
